One Box Isn't Enough!

Encourage the Department of Education to implement federal guidelines that allow individuals to "mark one or more" races on forms

One Box Isn't Enough is an effort of MAVIN Foundation's Campus Awareness & Compliance Initiative (CACI), with Level Playing Field Institute, and in partnership with the Association of MultiEthnic Americans (AMEA) and Hapa Issues Forum (HIF).

Through One Box Isn't Enough we seek to encourage the U.S. Department of Education to implement federal guidelines that allow individuals to "mark one or more" races on forms that request race and ethnicity. These guidelines were originally instituted by the Office of Management and Budget in 1997.

Almost eight years after the original guidelines were released and over two years after the initial deadline for all federal agencies to implement them the Department of Education still has not released guidance for educational institutions to implement these guidelines. As a result most of the over 2.5 million mixed race students in the United States are forced to identify inaccurately on forms asking for race and ethnicity.

One Box Isn't Enough will generate 10,000 public comments urging the Department of Education to implement Office of Management and Budget guidelines. These comments will be gathered through a concerted grass roots effort that will involve partners both within and outside of the multiracial movement.
